Best Time to Visit Spain and Portugal

Celebrated for their delicious cuisines, breathtaking landscapes, and rich culture and history, Spain and Portugal are two of Europe’s most coveted vacation destinations. Visitors from all over the world come to experience these countries’ beautiful beaches, dramatic countryside, and vibrant cities yearly. However, spring and autumn are often regarded as the best times to visit the Iberian Peninsula. Travelers can enjoy mild weather, reduced tourist crowds, and excellent conditions for exploring both the coast and inland regions. See the best of Spain and Portugal with a curated vacation package from YourTriptoSpain&Portugal!

Spring is one of the absolute best times to travel to Spain and Portugal! From March to May, the Iberian Peninsula boasts warm, comfortable temperatures and beautiful landscapes ideal for exploration and cultural enrichment. In Spain, you can enjoy private tours of historic cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia with perfect conditions for all-day sightseeing and outdoor dining. In Portugal, experience Lisbon and Porto’s many excellent museums and historic landmarks as the spring season breathes life into the region. Plus, the summer crowd has yet to arrive, meaning you get appealing hotel rates and an overall quieter and more relaxed vacation experience.

Summer is peak season in Portugal and Spain, ideal for travelers seeking a picturesque beach vacation or fun nightlife! June through August brings long, warm days perfect for relaxing in Spain’s gorgeous Balearic Islands, Galicia, and Costa de la Luz, as well as Portugal’s Algarve. While inland cities like Madrid and Seville can get very warm, their streets become quieter as locals flock to the beaches. Plus, the evening cools perfectly for wonderful dining experiences and drinks with friends! Summer is also a great time to experience Iberia’s rich culture with lively festivals like Spain’s La Tomatina and Portugal’s São João celebrations.

Some of the absolute best months to visit Portugal and Spain are September through November. That’s because the fall season brings cooler temperatures and smaller crowds, creating perfect conditions for exploring the country. Spain’s wine regions, like La Rioja and Ribera del Duero, as well as Portugal’s Douro Valley, become prime destinations for private vineyard tours and curated wine tastings. Cities such as Barcelona, Lisbon, Porto, and Valencia host exciting cultural events and festivals during the harvest season, offering perfect conditions for sightseeing. Plus, coastal destinations like Costa Brava and the Algarve remain warm enough to enjoy without the usual tourist crowd.

Winter in the Iberian Peninsula is like no other in the world. Spain and Portugal offer milder temperatures than much of Europe, plus festive holiday traditions that really make the season magical! Cities like Madrid, Lisbon, Barcelona, and Porto come alive with sparkling lights and Christmas-time celebrations, such as Spain’s Día de los Reyes and Portugal’s spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks. A visit to Iberia from December to February will also afford you some fantastic skiing opportunities in Spain’s beautiful Pyrenees, while coastal regions like the Algarve and the Canary Islands offer a peaceful seaside retreat.

Exceptional every step of the way. The accommodations selected for us were top notch and well-situated. The guides they work with (food and general city walking tours) were engaging, knowledgeable and fun to be with. A live person was available and responsive whenever issues arose (dropping off luggage before rooms were ready, coordinating pick-ups, adjusting to a late schedule change). We had a spectacular week-long 3 city family vacation in Spain and I highly recommend them.

The ladies at YourTripToSpain&Portugal set us up with a wonderful 3-week trip to Spain and Portugal. We visited Barcelona, Granada, Sevilla, Madrid, Porto, Lisbon, and several places in between. Every hotel was centrally located with great amenities. All of our guided tours were top rate. I was especially impressed with the high-end food and wine that we were treated to when included on our tours. I would highly recommend this travel agency. Be prepared for lots of interesting activities - you'll need to pace yourself.

We used Your Trip to Spain and Portugal to plan our 25th wedding anniversary trip to Spain, and it was honestly the most incredible travel experience we’ve ever had. From the moment we landed to the moment we left, every single detail was taken care of so thoughtfully that all we had to do was enjoy ourselves. We started in Barcelona, staying in a beautiful boutique hotel in a perfect area. We had private guides and a driver throughout the city, and our favorite experiences there were a relaxed bicycle tour and an amazing scuba dive along the coast. We visited the major landmarks—La Sagrada Família, Park Güell, the Gothic Quarter—and every moment felt curated just for us. From there, we headed to Seville, where the team arranged one of the most memorable activities of the entire trip: shopping at the local market with a chef and then cooking a traditional meal with her in her home. It was such an authentic, intimate experience. We also had a flamenco lesson before seeing a live flamenco show, and learning the history and emotion behind the dance made the performance even more special. Our tours around the Alcázar, Plaza de España, and the historic neighborhoods were all private, perfectly paced, and full of great stories. On our way to Granada, we stopped in Ronda for a beachside picnic with a gorgeous view—it felt like something out of a movie. Granada itself was breathtaking, especially with our private tour through the Alhambra and the Albaicín. Again, the accommodations were beautiful and in the best part of town. Finally, we took a comfortable train to Madrid, where we toured the Royal Palace, the Prado, and the vibrant neighborhoods with yet another wonderful private guide. Every city felt effortless because transfers, tours, and timing were coordinated so smoothly. What really sets Your Trip to Spain and Portugal apart is how responsive they were—anytime we had a question or needed anything, they replied immediately and took care of it. We felt safe, supported, and genuinely looked after the entire time. This trip was a dream, and we owe that to their incredible planning, incredible partners, and truly personalized service. If you’re looking for a beautifully crafted, stress-free, unforgettable vacation, we couldn’t recommend them more.

My husband and I just returned from a glorious 12 day, custom itinerary, including the driving of our own vehicle for close to 350 miles in Andalusia, Spain. Patty, and all at YourTripToSpainandPortugal….We thank you so much! The entire experience was seamless…. from airport transfers, hotel transfers, the acquiring of our vehicle, the return of our vehicle the planned itinerary ….it simply could not have been done better. Not only were our guides personable and comfortable to be with, they were simply walking encyclopedias…..Every question that we asked was not only answered, but it was an answer in depth. Upon the finalizing of our itinerary, we received an APP that was our trip. It was the complete itinerary down to the name and telephone numbers of our guides. Complete addresses, complete day by day summary….what to expect and what to wear! I cannot thank you enough for making this trip simply wonderful!

We worked with Ana Calvera at YourTriptoSpain&Portugal to plan a 14 day trip from Barcelona to Alquezar to Larrede to San Sebastián. It was fabulous. Every detail was planned and executed flawlessly by Ana and her team. This included four hotel stays and 9 guides. We had non-stop fun! We had never been to the Basque Country and San Sebastián. Ana told us they would be fabulous and she was absolutely right. This is our second vacation with Ana and we highly recommend her if you are going to Spain and/or Portugal.

Ana and her team provided us with the most excellent and memorable trip through Spain imaginable. From their arrangement and attention to every detail of our itinerary, listening to our needs and interests, to their excellent choice of experienced and high quality local guides and drivers for every transfer, to the fine selection of comfortable hotels, to making all the bookings for galleries, museums, trains and planes, and their availability 24/7, was outstanding. With the grace of storytellers and the insight of locals, our guides revealed the deeper spirit of each town and region, bringing the culture to life in unexpected ways, a great gift for non Spanish speakers. The provision of an app that contained not only our itinerary but all the documentation and guides for each town and dining options was a huge plus also. We would definitely book with them again.

The Most Stress-Free Trip We've Ever Had My wife and I have been lucky enough to travel to many places around the world, but our April-2025 journey organized by Your Trip to Spain and Portugal was easily one of the best. Ana and her team thought of every detail. All we had to was show up and enjoy these two beautiful countries! We went to 4 cities: Lisbon, Porto, San Sebastian and Barcelona. The itineraries were thoughtfully planned to give us great experiences without wearing us out too much. And the guides in each city were fun, knowledgeable and engaging. The transportation was always easy and on time, and the hotels were top-notch. When we return to the Iberian peninsula, we'll definitely use Your Trip to Spain and Portugal again.
