VISIT MONTSERRAT ABBEY & MOUNTAIN FROM BARCELONA

Some of our clients have a very strong religious interest in going to Montserrat and they already know that they want to visit it. However, some of our clients usually ask: is Montserrat Mountain worth a visit? What is there to see in Montserrat? What is there to do in Montserrat?

We will of course tailor-make the experience based on your interests, travel style and travelers profile (family, kids, etc.), but let us give you a brief introduction about Montserrat Mountain and Abbey.

Montserrat is one of the main pilgrimage shrines in Spain and it is quite unique and special because it is home to the Black Madonna.

The legend says that an icon of a Black Virgin with her son sitting on her lap was found in a small cave in Montserrat Mountain. People tried to move it to the village, but it was so heavy that it became an unsuccessful mission. So, they decided to leave it and build a sanctuary there. Soon, the place became a pilgrimage shrine and it continues as of today. Indeed the holy cave is one of the highlights of the visit to Montserrat.

Another highlight is listening to the Escolania, one of the oldest boys’ choir in Europe. Documents testify to the existence of a religious and music school in Montserrat as far back as the 14th century. All the choir members receive a high standard of musical training, along with human and intellectual education, and they perform all around the world.

Apart from the religious approach, in Montserrat, you will also find a museum designed by the modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. In this museum, you will be able to admire art from different period, ranging from archaeological objects, to a Byzantine collection, to paintings from the 13th to the 20th century, belonging to renowned painters such as El Greco, Fortuny, Picasso, Dali, etc.

But apart from arranging a visit to the Montserrat Abbey, shorter or longer depending on your interests, we will tailor-make a round experience by combining other adventure or wine activities which will make your day out of the city!

  • Horseback riding
  • Hot-air ballooning
  • Sailing
  • Hiking
  • Visiting and doing wine and cava tasting in a boutique winery

And if you are a family, your kids will love the rack rail or funicular up to the top of Montserrat Mountain.

Finally, the natural landscape of Montserrat is beautiful! The mountain itself has a very singular rocky shape and impressive height from where you will be able to enjoy amazing views of the surroundings.
